Hugh Laurie portrays the character of Dr. Gregory House, the shows central character, who is an exceptional and misanthropic medical genius who leads a team of diagnosticians at the fictional Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital in New Jersey. Dr. House’ behavior often borders on being antisocial. Devoid of bedside manner and deals with his own constant physical pain by getting addicted to frequent use of pain killers, Dr. House uses a cane that interrupts his acerbic, brutally honest demeanor. But despite of this attitude, House is known for being a brilliant diagnostician whose unconventional thinking and flawless instincts pay him a great deal of respect. He is able to solve medical puzzles that other doctors are not able to understand.

The team led by House employs the differential diagnosis method, with House guiding the liberations. Using the whiteboard, House writes down and eliminates possible etiologies with a marker. On rare occasions, House tends to arrive at the correct diagnosis out of the blue, because most of their patients are misdiagnosed and just treated with medications accordingly.
